The Lasting Impact 2021-2022 NCFCA TP Sourcebook contains over 400 cards of high quality research, plus analysis and strategies. Within the sourcebook there are 5 cases (complete with 1ACs, Affirmative backups, and Negative briefs), 6 general briefs, and a thorough resolutional analysis document to jump start your understanding and research of this year’s topic.

Each case was tailor made to cover a broad scope of issues that are likely to be highly debated this coming season. These topics include prison labor, solitary confinement, attorney-client confidentiality, drugs, and prison care. Additionally, the general briefs provide a great way of not only jump-starting further research, but having evidence on hand that will be useful against many cases throughout the season. These general briefs cover topics including human rights: standards, human rights: violations, mental health, staff needs, medical care, and definitions/topicality. In all, the sourcebook provides a great way to dive into this year’s resolution and have research on hand all year long.

The TPers Horror Story Turned Utopia by Sarah Fox

It was the moment every policy debater fears. My partner and I had just asked our opponents what case they were running, and to our horror they gave us the name of one of the only cases we didn’t prep for at that national mixer. Not to mention it was the last prelim round – a breaking round. I less than confidently pulled out our one piece of evidence on the bill printed late the night before while my partner ran through the rain to retrieve a few pages of evidence from a fellow team. Needless to say, it was chaotic… Till we remembered there were such things as sourcebooks.

Meet Your TP 2020-21 Sourcebook Team

We are excited to announce the upcoming release of Lasting Impact’s Team Policy Sourcebook! It will include a total of 6 full cases, each case including a 1AC, negative brief, and affirmative backup. These cases will cover a broad range of EU immigration subjects likely to be discussed throughout the year such as asylum procedures, search and rescue assistance, integration, humane treatment of migrants, and more. Not only will the Sourcebook include these full 6 cases, each averaging around 52 pages of evidence, but it will also include three full general briefs covering economic, security, and human rights issues surrounding the resolution. With these briefs, competitors can gain a better grasp of the topic and face unusual cases without being left empty-handed.

Finally, the sourcebook will contain one broad document outlining the major areas of this year’s topic, general tips for debating EU policy, and an overview of how the rest of the book is put together.

We are confident that this resource will help students new to Policy Debate, as well as seasoned competitors. Laid out in an easily digested format, with strategy notes and explanations on each case and brief, this resource is sure to give novices a better grasp of the topic, along with a developed collection of cases and evidence in their arsenal.

We are also excited for the opportunity this resource gives advanced debaters to broaden their scope of knowledge about the resolution, the workings of the EU, and common arguments that will appear throughout the season. From brand-new to seasoned debaters, this Sourcebook is highly versatile and perfect for any experience level.

Who are part of the Lasting Impact! Team, who spent their summer researching to give you an awesome product to prepare you for a fantastic season?

Sarah Fox
Sarah is entering her third and final year in the NCFCA, having competed in Team Policy, platform, interp, and all the limited preps, and qualifying to Nationals both years. In her first year of competition, Sarah won two tournaments in TP and one in apologetics. In her second year, she and her TP partner Eli Mayfield won each qualifier they competed in and placed second at the Anderson National Mixer, earning 13th place nationwide in at-large points before the season was canceled. Sarah has also enjoyed competing in speech events, securing 22 top-ten finishes in two years, taking each of her speeches to finals this past season, and earning a 2020 Regional Championship Ironman award. Apart from the Christ-centered community and friendships in the NCFCA, her favorite parts of competition are TP debate, public policy research, and apologetics.

Logan Hickman
Logan is entering his third and final year of Team Policy Debate. He qualified to Regionals every year and broke at each tournament he attended last year, winning one of them. Logan loves limited prep speaking and qualified to Regionals in impromptu, but Team Policy debate is his favorite event. One of his favorite parts of competing in Team Policy is researching real-world issues and being forced to think about things in a logical, tangible, persuasive way. He credits his ability to articulate his position in a persuasive manner, his research skills, and some of his logical deduction ability to his time in the NCFCA. Along with his partner, Anna Macklem, he compiled over 200 pages worth of evidence and research during the abbreviated previous tournament season. Logan will be a student leader for his club this upcoming season.

Anna Macklem
Qualifying to Regionals both years she competed, Anna is heading into her third year of Team Policy debate. Along with her partner, Logan Hickman, she broke in every tournament she competed at this year. A student leader at her club, Anna’s favorite event is TP, though she’s also competed in extemp, impromptu, and informative. She spent an average of 20 hours a week researching debate during the previous season, which translated to winning a tournament before the season was cancelled. She and two other students also wrote, developed, and taught a TP summer camp this year.

Eli Mayfield
Eli has competed in both speech and debate for three years, qualifying to the Regional Championship all three years, and to the National Championship the last two. His first two years of debate were in LD, which helped him build the skills of cross-examination and quick thinking. During his third year of debate in TP, Eli and his partner Sarah Fox won both Regional Qualifiers they attended, as well as placing 2nd at the Anderson National Mixer. He and Sarah were the 13th team nationally in at-large point totals at the termination of the season. In speech, Eli especially enjoyed apologetics, extemporaneous, and any platform category. His persuasive speech placed 14th at the 2019 National Championship. Eli will be attending the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill this fall to pursue a career as a Nurse Practitioner or a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.

Tips on Ballot Writing and Giving Feedback – FREE download

I know judges sometimes struggle with what to write on Speech and Debate ballots. It’s hard to express your feelings on paper. Over the years, I’ve seen thousands of ballots and they are usually a blessing (for the most part) and a source for students to refer back to. I mean, let’s be honest, some kids keep their ballots for years after competing. However, once in a while there are some comments that would be better not to write, and it usually involves a pre-disposed bias. So I challenge judges to really think before you write…

Themes in Debate PLUS *Sneak Peak at 2019-2020 LD Guide

It’s that time of year again, pumpkins, cool nights, falling leaves and….

Debate prep! If you are doing LD this year, I’m sure you have realized that this resolution is really challenging in more ways than one. Not only is the wording different than you’re probably used to, it’s a fact resolution so there is only one side, but also the topic is unbelievably complicated. Everyone from scholars to military experts has been debating about it for thousands of years. You will need to understand not only debate concepts, but ethics, philosophy, and history just to name a few. Because of all these reasons and the gap we saw in providing real, understandable, concrete help to you, Lasting Impact! created the 2019-2020 NCFCA LD Guidebook written by two of its top competitors, Hope Rawlson and Caleb Sampson. No matter who you are or your experience level, from novice to experienced debater, we believe this guide will be of tremendous benefit to you. This is a complete resource, not your typical “sourcebook”. In addition to LD cases, we wanted to help you understand the most important parts of LD by going through it section by section. Included in the Guidebook are extensive briefs on Definitions, Resolutional Analysis, Values, Contentions, Themes, Philosophy and Case Ideas. Plus, hundreds of evidence cards on historical events relevant to the resolution. So, whether you are learning how to do LD, teaching a club, exploring resources, or trying to get a head start on the season, we believe this Guidebook can send you on your way to being a fantastic LD debater! The NCFCA 2019-2020 LD Guidebook has arrived!!

Imagine this: It’s the beginning of a new competition season. You’re excited to start learning about the new debate resolution, and you need a way to gain a killer understanding of the topic. So what do you do? You buy a sourcebook for the resolution. Sounds logical, right? Well, not completely. The book you just purchased is composed of two sample cases and a few pages of briefs. You read through all the material, and even though it’s solid, you’re left wanting to learn even more.

I’ve been debating for five years now, and over that time, I’ve come to a conclusion about debating; it can be pretty tricky! Let’s face it, answering questions that have stumped the world’s brightest minds requires a huge amount of foundational knowledge. If you need a beginner case or a basic brief, most LD sourcebooks are great, but if you want a complete, awesome, expert understanding of Lincoln Douglas Debate, they’re simply not enough.

That’s where Lasting Impact! comes in. For the past three months, we’ve been creating a completely new type of LD sourcebook: The 2019-2020 NCFCA LD Guidebook. The purpose of this Guidebook is to fill a role that other sourcebooks don’t, the role of a complete resource. We’ve delved into legal journals, philosophy texts, and ancient writings to round up as much information as possible to send you on your way to being an expert LD debater!

Included in the LD Guidebook are extensive lists of –

  • Definitions
  • Values
  • Resolutional Analysis
  • Contentions
  • Case Ideas
  • Strategies
  • Philosophies

Most important of all, the Guidebook includes HUNDREDS of evidence cards (yes, hundreds) on historical events relevant to the current resolution. So you’ll know all about preventive wars fought in ancient Greece, modern Iraq, and everything in between.

The NCFCA LD Guidebook is written by two of NCFCA’s top competitors- Hope Rawlson and Caleb Sampson. Hope Rawlson is the reigning 2019 National NCFCA LD, Moot, and Extemp Champion. Caleb Sampson is a two-time LD National Quarterfinalist, as well as the 2019 NCFCA Sweepstakes Champion and the 2018 Illustrated Oratory National Champion. “We’re so excited and blessed to be a part of this project, and hope you’ll take advantage of this awesome resource. We truly believe that with the foundation of the Lasting Impact! NCFCA LD Guidebook, competitors will hit the ground running as they get ready to compete in 2020!”

It’s Here! Lasting Impact! Devotional ~ Seek Him First

Speech and Debate is an amazing activity, there is no doubt about that! Learning how to communicate better, the research, the prep, navigating through nerves and relationships, pushing yourself to become stronger, better… and for what!? Life!?! Yes! But would you believe this experience, through Speech and Debate, could be a whole lot sweeter, richer, fuller?? How? By Seeking Him First!

The Lasting Impact! Team has been putting countless hours into this project – “Seek Him First – Devotions for Speech and Debate.” We are excited to share deeper thoughts of growth and encouragement. The experiences range from competitors, parents, club leaders, students, as well as National Champions. Lasting Impact! Founder, Heather Neumann states, “This is about the bigger picture! If we are only participating in Speech and Debate for the competition, then shame on us! Seek Him First is about looking for God in everything we do – including Speech and Debate!”

Each devotion has an Application Page – three questions which students can ponder, offering endless possibilities to apply the devotion to their life. And although there are many Speech and Debate examples, students will be able to apply the Word of God to all of their lives. There are also additional pages for notes that can be used for journaling, note-taking, memory work, or additional scripture references.

Lasting Impact! created this resource to remind students about the bigger purpose behind Speech and Debate. Clubs and families can use it to show how God is in everything we do, including Speech and Debate.

It’s almost ready… The Lasting Impact! Devotional

Every year before I head out on a summer whirlwind of camps and workshops, I dig into The Word to see what God is going to give me to say to these students, parents, club leaders, and coaches. Sure, I know how to pick an Interp or how to make learning about Platform or Limited Prep Speeches fun. But what is it that God really wants to say through me? That’s what really matters!! I’ll admit it, after a long competition season, I feel like I am going to the well parched and ready. In Speech and Debate, we spend so much time focusing our lives around the competition, club meetings, Debate briefs, research, practicing, tournaments, etc. I feel like the summer is for rejuvenation. Psalm 81:10, “For it was I, the Lord your God who rescued you from the land of Egypt. Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it with good things.” How better to get rejuvenated… through Him!! Yet, why did I wait until summer!?
