Walking Into Speech and Debate Camp With the Right Mindset

Ahhh- the joys of summer! I truly hope you have had the opportunity for some rejuvenation, or at least some rest and relaxation. This summer has been a bit more unique than summers past. Most speech and debate programs have turned virtual, and perhaps you are not interested. I truly hope that is not the case, because growth is waiting to happen… whether it is IN PERSON or online. Speaking of IN PERSON opportunities… There are a few IN PERSON Camps (listed below) – I’d love to see you there! But whether or not you have signed up for a Speech and/or Debate Camp, make sure you come in the right mindset…

Having the right mindset for what you are about to experience is crucial! Here are just a few tips…

  1. Open Minded. Whether you are about to experience your first Speech and Debate Camp or an Online Camp, be open minded. You might like it, imagine that?! If you are closed to growth, otherwise known as a fixed mindset, you may not be able to see the wonderful world or relationships in store. Make sure you have a growth mindset!
  2. Grace. Please know, because I know, everyone running your camp is trying to give you the best experience possible. A little grace can go a long way.
  3. Participation. Go willing to participate! I know, this may seem hard or out of your comfort zone, but you will get the most out of camp, if you are willing to put in it! Also, for experienced students make sure you are able to take the lead, if needed. Encourage younger students to explore, and perhaps show them how. This is an opportunity to show your leadership skills.
  4. Look for “nuggets.” The opportunity to grow is everywhere!! I have been an educator for over 20 years… and I am still growing! Students who have participated in Speech and Debate Camps every summer, may need to look for nuggets to provide them with an “Ah-ha moment.”

I hope you take these tips to heart so you can make the most of your summer!
