The Coolidge Cup Is Here: Why This Unique Competition Captures the Heart of Speech and Debate

This week, some of the nation’s top speech and debate students are gathering in the historic hometown of President Calvin Coolidge for one of the most unique competitions in forensics: the Coolidge Cup. And did you know Lasting Impact! will be there? In fact, many of our Lasting Impact! Coaches are Coolidge Champions and alumni. We have been a proud supporter and have coached numerous students for the competition and we want to encourage you give this league a try…

Hosted annually by the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation, the Coolidge Cup brings together exceptional competitors from across the country for an invitational championship focused on one thing above all else: persuasive civic discourse. Held in Plymouth Notch, Vermont, during the week of the Fourth of July, the competition combines patriotism, history, and communication in a truly memorable setting.

Unlike many modern debate formats that can sometimes prioritize speed and technical jargon, Coolidge Debate emphasizes clarity, persuasion, and the ability to communicate with ordinary citizens. Competitors speak to “citizen judges” — volunteers who may have little or no formal debate experience — requiring students to make arguments that are logical, accessible, and compelling to everyday Americans.

In many ways, it reflects the kind of communication our country desperately needs more of: thoughtful disagreement, careful reasoning, and respectful persuasion.

Why Students Love the Coolidge Cup

The Coolidge Cup challenges students to develop skills that extend far beyond competition:

  • Speaking persuasively to real-world audiences.
  • Explaining complex ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Thinking critically under pressure.
  • Defending ideas with evidence and logic.
  • Engaging in civil discourse, even amidst disagreement.

These are not simply debate skills…

  • They are leadership skills.
  • They are citizenship skills.
  • They are life skills.

The Lasting Impact! Difference

At Lasting Impact!, we are honored to come alongside students competing not only in the Coolidge Cup, but across a variety of leagues, organizations, and competitive formats. Whether students are participating in NCFCA, Coolidge Debate, STOA, local leagues, or independent competitions, our mission remains the same: to equip young people to communicate truth with confidence, clarity, and conviction.

Every organization values slightly different skills. Every event presents unique opportunities and challenges. Our coaches work with students to understand the nuances of each format while developing the timeless skills of critical thinking, effective communication, and persuasive advocacy.

We are proud supporters of the Coolidge Cup and the important work being done to promote civil discourse, thoughtful debate, and engaged citizenship among the next generation of leaders.

To all of the competitors stepping into rounds this week: we are cheering you on. Your preparation, dedication, and willingness to stand up and speak matter more than you know.

Good luck, competitors. Make your voices heard—and make a lasting impact.
