Navigating the Sea of Speech Topics

Hey there, fellow speech enthusiasts! Ahoy! You might be wondering why I sound like a sailor navigating the high seas. Well, embarking on your speech journey in Speech and Debate is not so different from setting sail. And one of the places we can find ourselves lost in the sea is when we are asked to choose a topic! So how do you find the perfect wind to carry your ship (or in this case, your speech) forward…

Navigating the waters of speech topics can be overwhelming, especially when you want it to resonate with your beliefs, passion, and the ethos of the league you are in. But fear not, for I’ve got a compass to guide you!

  1. Passion’s Port: What stirs your soul? It could be a hobby, a book, a cause. If you can’t wait to talk about it at the dinner table, it might be your perfect topic. Remember, when you’re genuinely excited, your enthusiasm becomes infectious.
  1. Current Course: The world is ever-evolving, and there’s a tide of current events. Look into recent headlines, innovations, or debates that align with Christian values. Connecting with the present makes your speech relevant and relatable.
  1. Testimonial Tides: Personal stories or experiences can be incredibly powerful. Sharing a lesson you learned, a challenge you overcame, or a moment of clarity can be both touching and motivational. It’s authentic, it’s raw, and it’s uniquely you.
  1. The Feedback Fleet: Lean on your community – parents, club members, coaches. Present a handful of ideas, and see which ones create a spark. Often, our close ones see the potential in topics we might overlook. They’re your crew; let them help steer the ship.
  1. Prayerful Pondering: This is pivotal. Before finalizing, take your topic to God in prayer. Seek clarity and ensure that your chosen topic aligns with His will for you this season.

Anchoring on the right topic isn’t always smooth sailing. There might be storms, and you might need to change course. But once you find that perfect wind – that topic that fills your sails with enthusiasm and purpose – the voyage becomes worth it.

And as you set sail with your chosen topic, remember you’re not alone in this vast ocean. The Lord is your guiding star, and this community, Lasting Impact, your fleet. Happy sailing, and may your speeches always find a welcoming shore!
