Ask the Coach – New Competitor Advice by Heather Neumann

I am a new student, heading to my first speech and debate tournament, what should I focus on?

Great question! There is a lot of soak in! A tournament involves long days, and often not a lot of sleep, so here’s a few tips…

Make sure you are PRESENT. People and tournaments have changed A LOT over the past decade. It saddens me to see all the AirPods or phones out and heads down. Look up, look around. You might be missing just the thing you need – a conversation, information on a case, or a fellow competitor needing encouragement. Just because you are new doesn’t mean you won’t be able to contribute your assets. But in order to do so, you must be present!

WATCH and LEARN. Soak it in! Watch a variety of events – things you compete in and things you don’t. You never know what may peak your interest or learn!

Focus on YOU. Many people get stuck in “competition mode.” You can’t always control the competition. But you can focus on how you want to grow. Make goals for yourself! They could be geared around the rounds or a particular event or the tournament as a whole. Keeping the focus on these things can lighten the pressure on yourself. Having your expectations on growth can curb disappointment. Remember the art of communicating is a life long process, the more you practice the better you get.

Oftentimes, new competitors (and even judges) are extremely nervous attending their first speech and debate tournament. Being nervous is ok! That tells me you care… I want all my students to care. Hopefully you will feel a little better forcusing on the tips above. And of course keeping your focus on Him! Ultimately, wanting to glorify Him in all you do, will hopefully ease those first tournament jitters!

Remember, you got this! Cuz He’s Got You!
