Why a Human Script Assessment or Coaching Is Invaluable

And Why AI Can’t Replace the Human Touch in Speech & Debate

Artificial intelligence has changed how students write. With the click of a button, speeches can be outlined, rewritten, polished, and refined. AI can be a helpful tool—but it is not a coach. And when it comes to script assessment, nothing replaces the insight of a human who understands people, performance, and purpose.

At Lasting Impact!, we believe technology should support growth, not replace mentorship. And while AI can assist in brainstorming or editing, it cannot fully understand what makes a speech connect. Did you know Lasting Impact! has live classes (Winter 2026 Clubs just started!) instructors, and coaching waiting to work personally with your competitor? Although AI can be a great tool, don’t let it replace the human touch! Continue reading about how to use AI and ways to connect with an audience…

What AI Can Do Well

Let’s be honest—AI has strengths:

  • It can help generate ideas
  • It can improve grammar and clarity
  • It can offer structural suggestions
  • It can rephrase or condense content quickly

These tools can be useful starting points. But speech and debate is not about producing text—it’s about persuading, inspiring, and communicating with humans!! The number one element I talk about in a coaching session is CONNECTION! It does not matter how great of a speaker you are… if you are not connecting feelings to the words you say or to your audience… your efforts may be fruitless!

That’s where AI reaches its limits.

What AI Can’t See (But Humans Can)

1. Performance Potential

A human assessor doesn’t just read words—they imagine the speech on its feet.

  • How will this line land?
  • Where should the speaker pause?
  • What moment needs emphasis?
  • Where does emotion need restraint or release?

AI can’t feel the rhythm of a speech or anticipate audience response. This takes practice. I want the speaker to FEEL their speech!

2. Audience & Judge Awareness

Human coaches understand:

  • Judge expectations
  • Event-specific norms
  • League rules and interpretations
  • Trends in competition

They know what judges actually respond to, not just what sounds good on paper.

3. Emotional Intelligence

A human coach recognizes:

  • When a story is powerful but too raw
  • When a moment needs sensitivity
  • When a student’s voice shines through—and when it doesn’t

AI can’t sense vulnerability, maturity, or authenticity.

4. Thematic Cohesion

A human can ask:

  • What is this speech really about?
  • Does every piece serve the theme?
  • Where does the message lose focus?

AI often improves sentences—but humans refine meaning. I always ask… What is your take-away? What do you want your judges or audience to know or understand about your speech? These valuable questions can mold your speech. Do not let AI THINK for you!! That’s your job!

5. Purpose and Impact

Human assessors help students answer:

  • Why does this matter?
  • What should the audience feel or do afterward?
  • Is this speech compelling—or just informative?

Great coaching is about intentional impact, not just polished writing. Coaches also try to give options that you can choose which ideas fit YOU best!! AI doesn’t know you!

Why Students Need Human Feedback

Students don’t just need edits—they need guidance. Can you imagine being judged by robots? A human has the ability to connect, engage and interact! There is a real difference between an online tournament and in person. We see feedback is less… judges are less likely to really interact with the speaker. How to adjust your speech is cruicial! These are the learning and growing moments! These are the types of growths one can feel when working with a coach…

  • Encouragement when they’re discouraged
  • Direction when they’re stuck
  • Challenge when they’re playing it safe
  • Validation when their voice matters

A human coach builds confidence, not dependency.

Why Parents Should Value Human Assessment

For parents, a human script assessment means:

  • Your student is being mentored, not automated
  • Feedback is tailored—not generic
  • Growth is intentional—not accidental
  • Communication skills are being developed for life

It’s not just about winning rounds—it’s about shaping thinkers, leaders, and communicators.

The Lasting Impact! Difference

At Lasting Impact!, our script assessments are done by experienced coaches who have:

  • Worked with thousands of students
  • Coached National Champions
  • Judged countless rounds
  • Seen what works—and what doesn’t

But more importantly, we care about the student behind the script. We look for voice, purpose, clarity, and potential—and we coach with the whole person in mind.

A Final Word on AI…

AI is a tool.
A coach is a guide.

You may use technology to assist your process—but trust humans to shape your message. Because in speech and debate, connection is everything. And connection has always been human.
