Western Civilization is in the midst of a crisis. You are living in the midst of one of the great ideological battles in history. Whether you want to be a better debater, increase your ability to defend your faith, or become a more well-rounded individual, you must know and be able to articulate the truth.
How can you stand firm in truth if you don’t know where the battle lines of ideas are drawn?
This fall, Lasting Impact! is partnering with Speaking with Grace and Charis Baker. She is offering an 8-week live class for high schoolers who want to achieve these exact goals. We’ll read, write on, and discuss Dr. Glenn Martin’s comprehensive overview of the thoughts that have shaped Western philosophy: Prevailing Worldviews of Western Society Since 1500. Join Charis Baker to better identify and defend your beliefs and understand the history of philosophy. Continue reading for a glimpse into the questions and ideas we’ll be examining….

If the Enlightenment redefined reason and Postmodernism rejected truth, what worldview are you living in now? Is it shaping you without your consent?
Todd Huizinga, in the Journal of International Relations and Sustainable Development, states the most basic objection to the prevailing ideology of the twenty-first century, postmodernism: “It is fundamentally incoherent: if you deny truth, then how can you come up with a worldview that is true or that corresponds to reality?” The twenty-first century has satisfied itself with the denial of reality. It has exchanged the truth for a lie. As thinkers, Americans, and most importantly, believers, are we prepared to respond?
Are you prepared to identify the ideas that shape your beliefs? Or are you unconsciously shaped by them?
Throughout his book, Prevailing Worldviews of Western Society Since 1500, Dr. Glenn Martin analyzes the worldview shift of Western thought beginning with medieval theism and the Reformation, progressing through secular humanism and Enlightenment thought, naturalism, and concluding with the present thought, postmodernism. Postmodernist thought, even if subconsciously, has made the state into god and, as such, determines that it merits limitless power. When God is rejected, even declared non-existent, such is the way that society turns. In place of God, we find man and the state.
If the voices of Descartes, Rousseau, and Nietzsche still echo in today’s headlines, shouldn’t Christians be able to recognize them?
The rejection of good and evil, absolute truth, and created order culminates in the words of Friedrich Nietzsche describing the result of the Enlightenment as he pronounced that God is dead at the hands of men. Enlightenment thought and, by extension, postmodernism, had written Him out of existence.
Are you prepared to identify the ideas that shape your beliefs—or are you unconsciously shaped by them?
