An Oratorical Speech category has come and go throughout the years. Leagues see the value of looking at other speeches, whether the presenter is famous or not. Lasting Impact! has written several articles on the subject throughout the years, which you can find by typing the word “oratorical” in our search button on the right hand side. Or go HERE. NCFCA is introducing Oratorical Thematic this year. This is an exciting and meaningful speech event that invites students to do something powerful: to discover a unifying theme and bring it to life through the published words of others.
Rather than writing an original speech, students curate, select, and perform excerpts from existing speeches, weaving them together to explore a big idea – think Interpretive Thematic or Biblical Thematic. It’s an event rooted in research, interpretation, creativity, and purpose—and one that rewards thoughtful storytelling and clarity.
For students who love ideas, history, rhetoric, and performance, Oratorical Thematic offers a unique opportunity to communicate truth through voices that have already shaped the world. Or maybe you are looking for something different- an old/new category that isn’t super difficult to breakdown. Intrigued?? Read on…
What Is Oratorical Thematic?
At its core, Oratorical Thematic asks students to:
- Choose a clear theme (such as courage, justice, freedom, sacrifice, faith, perseverance, or leadership)
- Select published speeches from a variety of speakers
- Arrange and perform excerpts in a way that illuminates the theme
- Create a cohesive presentation that feels intentional, compelling, and meaningful
- Remember, students have 350 words to weave their ideas. This could be presented as themselves, or because it’s an interp it could be presented as someone else.
The challenge—and the beauty—of this event is that the student becomes both curator and interpreter. They are responsible not just for what is said, but why it is said and how the pieces fit together.
Why Oratorical Thematic Matters…
This event develops a powerful combination of skills: critical thinking, interpretation, thematic cohesion, and purposeful communication. Let me break it down a little deeper…
Critical Thinking
Students must evaluate speeches carefully, looking beyond famous lines to find ideas that truly serve their theme.
Interpretation
Although the words are not original, the performance is. Students must bring clarity, tone, pacing, and emotional understanding to each excerpt.
Thematic Cohesion
Success depends on how well the speeches connect. Judges are looking for a clear throughline, not a collection of unrelated quotes. Themes are found everywhere in Speech and Debate! The quicker students understand this, the better.
Purposeful Communication
Students must help the audience understand why these words matter—together. Every event has value. This event is no different. Even though people may have heard a famous speech before, how can you bring it tot life?
Choosing a Strong Theme…
A compelling Oratorical Thematic piece begins with a strong theme. When selecting one, students should ask:
- Is this theme clear and focused?
- Is it broad enough to explore from multiple voices, but narrow enough to feel intentional?
- Does this theme matter—to me and to my audience?
- Can I find a range of perspectives on this idea?
Great themes often touch universal human experiences: struggle, hope, truth, responsibility, identity, courage, or faith. Remember, themes can be abstract or concrete.
Selecting the Right Speeches…
Once a theme is chosen, the next step is selecting speeches that:
- Are published and permissible under the rules
- Represent different voices or perspectives
- Advance the theme rather than repeat the same idea
- Allow for variety in tone, style, and delivery
The goal is not to showcase famous speakers—but to let each excerpt add something new to the thematic journey. Remember, some students pick a speech first… this is ok! There is no RIGHT or WRONG way to do this. If you love a speech, can you think a theme that would suit it well… can you find another speech to weave in? Most students will have multiple speeches within their Oratorical Thematic. Last year’s winner of NCFCA Biblical Thematic had 5 excerpts of scripture!!
Performance: More Than Quoting…
Oratorical Thematic is not about reciting speeches. It’s about interpreting ideas!! Something I say all the time to my speech and/or drama students is… “we want to breathe life into our presentations!”
Strong performances:
- Use intentional transitions to guide the audience
- Adjust tone and pacing to reflect each speaker’s purpose
- Maintain clarity so the audience never gets lost
- Keep the theme front and center at all times
Every excerpt should feel necessary. Every moment should serve the message.
Who Thrives in Oratorical Thematic?
This event is especially well-suited for students who:
- Love ideas, history, and rhetoric
- Enjoy interpretation and performance
- Think thematically rather than linearly
- Appreciate collaboration between research and creativity
- Want to engage with meaningful, published material
- This can be a great beginner speech!
It’s also a wonderful bridge for students who enjoy interp events but want to explore persuasive and thematic speaking—or for platform speakers who want to perform without writing an original script.
