NCFCA/ASDA TP Res – A Deeper Look and Upcoming TP Online Camp

“The United States Federal Government should significantly reform its foreign policy toward one or more of the following Central American countries: Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica.”
This year’s NCFCA and ASDA TP resolution asks us to learn about some of our neighbors, who are just a few countries south. Given the number of countries covered under the resolution, it opens the door to a wide range of policies. International policy resolutions are distinct from domestic policy resolutions in that they offer debaters a greater challenge and a good opportunity to be creative. Some of my best years debating in the league were when I was challenged by an international policy resolution.
With a new debate year right around the corner, it’s about that time in the summer when most people (except the most studious debaters who started researching when the resolution was released) start to think about the topic for the upcoming season. You may be asking, “How do I tackle this year’s resolution, and where do I start?” I hope to provide a brief orientation to this year’s topic and pique your interest by examining three broad issues related to the resolution: economics, national security, and global stability. LD in NCFCA 2024-25 by: Drew Swanberg

It’s that time of year again. The new resolution is here and people are already forming their opinions and for next year’s debate season. As a coach, I have already taken a deeper look at the selected NCFCA Lincoln Douglas value debate resolution for 2024-2025 debate season.  Resolved: In combat, the use of automation should be valued above the use of Personnel. At first glance and without the context, it may not be clear whether this resolution begs ethical questions significant enough to debate. I would argue however, that there is practically an ocean of relevant moral philosophy to this highly relevant and deceptively nuanced resolution…

Introducing… NCFCA Nationals Debate Prep Group

You’ve qualified for NCFCA Nat’s….so now what?

If you have qualified for NCFCA Nationals and are thinking about how to prepare for that final competition of the season, then a prep group may be right for you. With Regionals now behind you and Nationals finally in sight, it’s important to carry your momentum from the season into that national tournament. This prep group outlined below is designed to examine the cases you will likely see at Nat’s, help you mentally prepare for the competition, and teach you how to build an effective narrative for both aff and neg.

What’s a narrative and why is it important?
The story behind your case is often the most important factor in deciding whether you will win or lose a round. If your judge walks out of the competition room with your narrative in mind, chances are you will pick up that ballot. Whether you are talking about a policy or a value, an effective narrative takes your case and connects it to a big idea. This big idea then becomes present throughout every aspect of your round to weave a cohesive narrative throughline.

How is this approach different from other prep groups?
This prep group will look a bit different from others offered because we will look at the big ideas and focus on analyzing and crafting narrative strategies. Our goal is not to search for evidence or write a bunch of briefs, but rather to focus on strategic narratives related to the cases you will likely hear at Nats. And prepare you to bring your most persuasive tool into nationals, Your Narrative.

Who will be leading the sessions?
This session will be led by Nathanael Kolssak, an NCFCA alum who has continued to coach and compete in speech & debate as a college student. Nathanael competed in NCFCA for seven years in nearly every speech & debate category. He achieved nationally ranked status in speech and debate in both high school and college, and is now a communications major, forensics competitor and assistant coach at Cedarville University. He continues to earn national awards in collegiate debate and has actively coached both Team policy and Lincoln Douglas this year. Nathanael’s approach to debate is idea-driven, as he is a staunch advocate for developing narratives that can captivate judges with a winning storyline.

● Identify the top cases expected at Nationals
● Learn what a good narrative looks like and how to build one
● Discuss which cases and strategies perform best in different regions
● Develop narrative strategies for aff and neg
● Build confidence for Nationals

Lasting Impact! and Ziggy are joining forces to create an epic Debate Championship to close out the 2021 season! I know you will have questions… so let’s get them started!

1. Why are Ziggy and Lasting Impact! teaming up? It’s always awesome to collaborate with like-minded organizations and friends. We love coming together and collaborating and giving families opportunities to engage in speech and debate opportunities.

2. What are your goals? We want to see students growing, and continuing to hone their debate skills whether they are attending NCFCA Nationals or not. This also continues to give judges the opportunity to fill out ballots and give more feedback. Essentially, it’s that feedback that can help students to think critically, analyze their thought process, and make decisions on what needs to be said, or what does not. And let’s not under estimate the power of practice!

3. Who is the Ziggy + Lasting Impact! National Championship for? You did not need to make it to Nationals to compete in this unique debate event. Not all of the top competitors will make it to Nationals. Iron sharpens iron. Use this for the opportunity to grow for next season, or use this as your last hoorah, or use this event to test out your cases!

4. Will there be a case list? Students will have the option to disclose the TP case they are running during signup, but do not have to do so. We encourage teams to share what case(s) they are running, though, as we believe this enhances the quality of rounds! Per Ziggy Rule 2(a)(ii), Aff TP teams will need to send a copy of their case to the Negative team upon request during the round.

5. Will there be prizes? Yes, of course! More details soon!

6. Why the weekly/5 day format? Easy. Flexibility!! We wanted something easy and flexible for you to commit to.

Sign Up Now! Online Tournament Prep Workshop

You may not want to hear it, but online communication is here to stay. It’s not going anywhere! While it seems as if it came abruptly in March of 2020, because of COVID, Lasting Impact! has been connecting with thousands of people across the country, even the world over the last five years! I have coached National Speech and Debate Champions, an Olympian, Fortune 500 Business owners, as well as students who want to be better communicators overall or simply want to enjoy the art of communication. And guess what? I have done this mostly online!! I have even directed a virtual play, as well four national online speech and debate tournaments, all within the that six months.

While all of us prefer to communicate in person and can’t wait to be together again, there is much to learn in the online environment. I believe communication, connection, and engagement can happen virtually. Until the day when we can be together, I will embrace, learn, grow, and adapt. There is much to learn!

This is why after our recent practice tournament, we decided we wanted to share with you the tips and tricks you can use to help you be a better virtual communicator. The Lasting Impact! Team will be offering an online workshop on how to prep for virtual tournaments. There are so many more elements to think through than just doing your speech or debating (in your bedroom) online. By now, you have been in an online meeting, where the presenter is back lit, or just the opposite and the sun is glaring in their eyes. We will address multiple items to get you thinking about how you want your online presentation to be, whether it be for speech or debate. Expectations From an Online Tournament from Lasting Impact! By: Thaddian Burson

I could say it a thousand times: Adaption to online tournaments will be essential for the upcoming debate season! Raise your hand if you want to try out online debate for the first time at an actual tournament with check marks or at-large points in the balance? No hands? I agree.
The speech and debate world is undergoing a huge shift to try and balance speech and debate while protecting people’s lives. This shift is towards online debate. As students, we can choose to either resist it and just hope that something changes, or embrace it and learn to adapt. I am with most of you in that my initial gut reaction to online debate was: “Yuck!” Yet, after participating in several online tournaments, one of which was hosted by Lasting Impact!, my perspective has entirely changed. I believe that online tournaments provide a more than viable way to continue speech and debate in the Covid era.
