Description:

Verdict and Lasting Impact! have come together to create an integrated and IN-PERSON summer camp experience for students who want to improve their public speaking and debate skills. This thoughtful and unique approach to teaching speech and debate through an intensive two-day summer camp is aimed at equipping students, parents, and coaches with the skills necessary to effectively communicate from a Biblical worldview. 

Beginning students will learn the fundamentals of debate and how to deliver a variety of speeches (e.g., platform, interpretive and impromptu speeches). Advanced students will focus on refutation, cross examination, and in developing and applying advanced debate strategies. They will also be challenged to develop their speaking personas and confidence with impromptu speaking.

Objectives 

• Collect and organize ideas into logical arguments
• Critically evaluate evidence for improved refutation
• Identify critical connections and the primary focus of any debate
• Learn to speak naturally and convincingly
• Learn to adapt & think on your feet 

• Learn to turn your fear and/or nervousness to energy and confidence 
• Stretch and grow in your communication skills (at every level)
• Learn to connect your thoughts & ideas into meaningful speeches
• Create purposeful thesis statements and roadmaps 
• Define and practice your debate/speech persona

 

Coaching Bios

Heather Neumann – 
Heather Neumann is the founder of Lasting Impact! (www.lastingimpact.info). She empowers her clients to find their inner voice through public speaking. Heather says, “Your voice has power. It has the ability to make a Lasting Impact! All you have to do is use it!” Lasting Impact! started in 2016 and contains over 500 articles about public speaking. Lasting Impact!’s goal is to better equip families by coming alongside students, parents, coaches, and clubs. Most of Heather’s clients are high school students participating in competitive Speech and Debate. However, Heather is also a speaker coach for TedX and has helped adult clients as well, including an Olympic Silver Medalist. She has been blessed to have coached thousands of students, including numerous National Champions.

Ethan Tong – Ethan Tong is joining the Lasting Impact! Team… again! He is also the head coach and founder of Blackstone Moot Court, the premiere Moot Court coaching organization in the nation. In addition to Moot coaching, he has coached Lincoln-Douglas, Team Policy, and Apologetics. His students have routinely placed at the National level. A recent graduate of Hillsdale College with a Philosophy and Religion degree, Ethan is attending Truett Theological Seminary at Baylor University, pursuing a Masters of Divinity. He approaches coaching with an equally strong focus on knowledge (from his liberal arts education) and rhetorical excellence (from his collegiate Mock Trial experience). Ethan will be coaching and traveling with Lasting Impact! this season, coaching students across the country, as well as leading the Lasting Impact! Limited Prep Club, LD Club, and authoring the Lasting Impact! LD Guide.
