Lesha Myer’s Windows to the World is a year long high school level literature course designed for 8th and 9th grade students that teaches the language and process of literary analysis and writing. WTTW is an enjoyable, clear, rigorous and yet gentle introduction to the skills that help students appreciate and learn as much as possible from great works of literature, all the while framing our studies from a biblical worldview. We will learn annotation skills, the elements of literature and literary devices, and apply it as we write essays, journals, and stories. We follow Jill Pike’s outstanding lesson plans as a guide and utilize the Center for Lit’s Teaching the Classics as an introduction to our studies. Together, we will read classic short stories by O. Henry, Susan Glaspell, and Leo Tolstoy, as well as the novels To Kill a Mockingbird, Jane Eyre, Fahrenheit 451, and Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
To Kill a Mockingbird by: Harper Lee
Jane Eyre by: Charlotte Bronte
Fahrenheit 451 by: Ray Bradbury
Hamlet by: Shakespeare
Bio – Amy Eichholz has taught Windows to the World previously in live homeschool class settings, as well as English classes in public and private high school setting. I began debate class eight years ago alongside my oldest son, and while he and all his siblings have graduated from novice debate, I’m still happily there. As I prepare for my fifth year coaching novices in my local club, Salt & Light, I can’t wait to see the transformation of another group of young students from beginners overwhelmed by the new language and demands of debate into enthusiastic and skilled competitors who think critically and deeply about important issues. Prior to homeschooling my children, I taught fifth through twelfth grades in public and private schools, with an emphasis on special needs and gifted education. I love debate because it synthesizes the critical thinking skills and applies them in exciting, real word ways.
