Are you planning to dive into debate this fall?  Debate is a wonderful learning experience that teaches you to think critically and communicate rationally about a wide variety of subjects.  But before you start learning about debate theory, there are some tools you need to have in your debate toolbox.  In this course, we will introduce some of these skills, including outlining and persuasive writing, an introduction to logic, basic economics and lawmaking, and a simplified look at foreign policy and the NCFCA resolution (European Union). Ages 10-14. Class size limited to 12.

Booklist:
The Fallacy Detective  by Nathanael Bluedorn
Whatever Happened to Penny Candy by Richard Marbury
Whatever Happened to Justice by Richard Marbury

Bio –  Amy Eichholz
I began debate class eight years ago alongside my oldest son, and while he and all his siblings have graduated from novice debate, I’m still happily there.  As I prepare for my fifth year coaching novices in my local club, Salt & Light, I  can’t wait to see the transformation of another group of young students from beginners overwhelmed by the new language and demands of debate into enthusiastic and skilled competitors who think critically and deeply about important issues.  Prior to homeschooling my children, I taught fifth through twelfth grades in public and private schools, with an emphasis on special needs and gifted education.  I love debate because it synthesizes the critical thinking skills and applies them in exciting, real word ways.
